EthelKays is Open for Business!
My new cart neighbor, EthelKays Grilled Cheese and Lemonade, is officially open! The owner, Julie, and her husband towed in on Thanksgiving morning and opened unofficially for the Shop Williams Late event on December 6. Below is the official press release in case you want to know more!
EthelKays Grilled Cheese and Lemonade Joins Lodekka on North Williams Ave.
EthelKays Grilled Cheese and Lemonade has joined Lodekka Double Decker Dress Shop in its space between Failing and Shaver Streets on North Williams Avenue, situated between Lompoc Sidebar and Hopworks Bike Bar. Lodekka, a clothing store located in a 1965 British double decker bus, has occupied the space since 2011.
The owner of EthelKays, Julie McBee, found out about the available space from a friend who is a regular Lodekka customer. McBee then spotted a tweet from Food Carts Portland about the space. She contacted Lodekka owner, Erin Sutherland, and they promptly bonded over their love of cheese. It was a match made in heaven.
EthelKays moved into the space on Thanksgiving morning and held a soft opening during a street-wide holiday event on December 6.
McBee serves up a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches, soups, salads and fresh-squeezed lemonade. She chose this combination of items because she feels that a glass of lemonade is the perfect light complement to the richness of grilled cheese. McBee has tested and perfected her menu at farmers markets and other local events over the last few years. View the entire EthelKays menu here.
McBee describes her cart as “a dream come true.” Her journey to open the cart spanned two years, followed by a one-year stint in a food cart pod in NE Portland.
“I’m excited to be a part of ever-evolving Williams Avenue,” says McBee, “and look forward to meeting and serving my new neighbors!”
The name EthelKays is an amalgamation of the names of McBee’s daughters.
EthelKays will be open Wednesday - Saturday from 9am – 3pm and Sunday from 9am – 2pm.The cart will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.
